RESTORING BUTTERNUT TREES

VOLUNTEER HOMEPAGE

2026 Sampling is Complete – Thank you!

Butternut sampling wrapped up this fall when the leaves turned. Your samples are with our research partners now, and there’s nothing left to collect.

One last thing, and it’s the one that shapes the next season: tell us how it went.

Less than 10 minutes of your time can positively impact years of future projects.

What your season of sampling added up to:

109

documented butternut trees

38

leaves sampled

TBA

states/miles sampled

If you searched your zone and came home without a sample, that counted too. Confirmed absence tells researchers where butternut isn’t growing, and that shapes the map as much as a sample does.

From here, the samples go to the Purdue University to be screened for the genetics behind disease resistance. The trees that hold up become the stock for replanting. We’ll email you when we have their findings.

Tell us how it went

We build the next season out of what volunteers say about this one. What was clear, what wasn’t, what you’d want handled differently before you’d do it again.

Time needed: approx. 10-15 minutes.   |    Impact: The next 15 years of project creation

FAQs

Can I still submit samples or data?

Not this year. Collection closed with the end of the leaf season and the dataset is with our partners. We will let you know via email when sampling re-opens. Stay tuned!

Do I need to return anything?

It costs more to ship back than the equipment is worth. We recommend either recycling or holding on to extras.

When will results be available?

Genetic screening takes time. We’ll email everyone who collected when there’s something to share.

Any other questions?
