VOLUNTEER FIELD DAY:

ADVENTURE TO SAVE EASTERN HEMLOCKS

On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, join the Pisgah Conservancy and Adventure Scientists for a Volunteer Field Day in Pisgah National Forest!

The Problem:

Eastern hemlock trees, vital for forest ecosystems, are under threat from the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid, a tiny insect that infests and devastates these iconic trees. Hemlocks play a crucial role in regulating stream temperatures, providing wildlife habitat, and preventing erosion. As the woolly adelgid spreads, entire forest ecosystems are being altered, making it urgent to identify and preserve hemlocks that show natural resistance.

The Solution:

You can make a difference! Join our field day to help identify candidate “lingering hemlocks” – trees that have survived severe infestations. The data you collect will guide efforts to breed and propagate resistant hemlocks, aiding in the recovery of this species.

Event Details:

When: Wednesday, January 22, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Where: Pisgah National Forest near Brevard NC (specific meeting location will be shared upon RSVP)

What You’ll Learn and Do:

  • How to identify eastern hemlocks and signs of hemlock woolly adelgid infestation.
  • How to spot “lingering hemlocks” and record observations using the TreeSnap app.
  • How to choose an adventurous hike and contribute to awesome science.

This is like a forest scavenger hunt for a great cause – no prior experience or tree identification skills are required! We’ll provide all the training you need.

Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Who Can Join:

This event is open to volunteers of all skill levels and ages. Children are welcome to attend the hike and learn, but data collection requires participants to be 18+.

Why Join Us?

  • Explore the beautiful Pisgah National Forest.
  • Contribute to critical conservation efforts.
  • Connect with like-minded nature enthusiasts and adventurers.
